Belgian
DEFRA 2025

Sol1 is a Belgian SME, and collaborates in that context with other Belgian companies in context of Defence-Related Research Actions.

Talk about collaboration >

AI in Support for Operations

AI is a key part of Sol1's solution, but also an area that is great for collaboration because there are so many challenges. From visual navigation in denied environments, to close-proximity formation flights, to situational awareness, many challenges exist on the aircraft.

But also on the ground segment, applied AI is important. We are especially interested in collaboration on the use of Large Language Models (LLM) to provide complex commands in chat format.

Cyber

In various EDF and commercial programs, Sol1's DMS connects UAVs to ground stations over the Internet via StarLink. We use SolPi, which is a proprietary OS that is built for aerospace and which is inherently secure from buffer overruns and similar attacks. However, this does not preclude more advanced attack methods. We look forward to working with relevant partners on tomorrow's cyberchallenges using novel approaches.

Medical Casualty Evacuation

Sol1 currently is part of the Bundeswehr-centric EDF medical evacuation. This includes handing of confidential medical information near the patient and at the patient evacuation coordination center (PECC). We would love to bring this experience to a DEFRA consortium.

Demining Technologies

Sol1's long-endurance UAV technology provides unique opportunities to rapidly scan large open areas for mines, such as roads and open fields. We look forward to consortia to realise this potential.

Sensor Technologies

In the context of situational awareness, Sol1's aircraft needs to be aware of other craft flying around them, in order to respond correctly. These are the same technologies that can be used by third parties from the ground. We look forward to work with partners on these sensing technologies.

Critical Maritime Infrastructure Protection

Sol1's long-endurance UAV with eVTOL take-off and landing capabilities is ideal for maritime operations. Other Belgian actors have complementary parts, that could be combined to provide maritime infrastructure protection.

Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems

Sol1's Saboteur UAS provides advanced long-range ISR and strike capabilities. This UAS provides interesting containerized deployment. However, these containers can themselves be targets for small kamikaze drones. Sol1 is interested in joining a C-UAS consortium to provide the role of the target that needs to be protected using the third party C-UAS technologies.
